### Tackling Human–Elephant Conflict in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s elephants are more than just wildlife — they are a living symbol of our natural heritage. These magnificent animals, especially the **Sri Lankan elephant** (*Elephas maximus maximus*), are an essential part of our culture, ecosystems, and identity. But today, they face one of their greatest threats: the increasing **human–elephant conflict (HEC)**.

### 🚨 A Crisis on the Rise
As human settlements expand and forests are cleared for agriculture and development, elephants are losing their traditional migratory paths and feeding grounds. In search of food and water, they now roam through villages, farmlands, and roads — bringing them dangerously close to human populations.
* **Over 400 elephants** are killed annually in Sri Lanka — mostly due to retaliation or accidental deaths from electrocution and traps.
* **Dozens of people**, mostly rural farmers, are also killed or injured each year trying to defend their families and livelihoods.This is not just a wildlife issue — it’s a humanitarian and environmental emergency.

### 🌿 The Role of NGOs in Elephant Conservation
At the heart of efforts to solve this crisis are **non-governmental organizations (NGOs)** — working tirelessly to bridge the gap between conservation and community welfare.
Here’s how NGOs are making a difference:
#### 🛠 Habitat Protection and Corridor Restoration
NGOs collaborate with local authorities and communities to **preserve and reconnect elephant corridors**, ensuring safe passage for migrating herds.
#### 📚 Community Education and Awareness
Workshops, school programs, and village campaigns help people **understand elephant behavior**, safety measures, and the importance of peaceful coexistence.
#### 🐝 Innovative Non-lethal Deterrents
Some NGOs are piloting sustainable deterrent solutions like:
* **Beehive fences**
* **Chili fences**
* **Solar-powered alarm systems**These tools are helping protect crops **without harming elephants**.
#### 🤝 Conflict Resolution and Policy Advocacy
NGOs also act as a bridge between communities and government agencies, advocating for **fair compensation, land-use planning**, and stronger protection laws.
#### 💼 Sustainable Livelihoods
By introducing **eco-tourism models**, skill training, and alternative income streams, NGOs help reduce the economic dependency on high-risk farming near elephant zones.
